Dynamic Campaign System

Cosmology Part 02

gaming rpg dnd dcs

This is Part 02 of a series wherein we talk about generating an entire campaign, on-the-fly, for your favorite fantasy role-playing game(s). In the future, it might have a tighter focus on either D&D or Pathfinder, but for now, let's consider this material more-or-less generic.

NOTE: All the usual polyhedron dice are used for DCS, though today, we'll only be using 1d4 and 1d12.

01: Cosmology

01.01: What came before? (continued...)

What existed before this world? Was it another world, filled with heroes? An endless plane of energy or thought? Or maybe there was nothing at all?

01.01.06

The Elemental Planes only (Earth, Fire, Water, Air)

Roll 1d12:

01 -- The four Elemental Planes were not always separate; once, they were perfectly blended into a single, vast Material Plane. This Material Plane was shattered in a war between unimaginable powers. The four Elements separated after this, collecting like-to-like, forming the Elemental Planes.

Roll 1d4:

01 -- Our world is all that's left of that earlier, vast world.

02 -- Our world is a miniature toy version of that world, created by the gods.

03 -- Our world, and all natural life upon it, are made from the rubble and scraps of that earlier world.

04 -- Our world is that earlier, vast world...and its destruction is yet to come. Another world will be born from the destruction of this one.

02 -- Only one Elemental Plane existed at first. The other Planes, including this very world, were born from that one.

Roll 1d4:

01 -- Earth

02 -- Fire

03 -- Water

04 -- Air

03 -- The Elemental Planes have always existed, long before this world did, and they will exist long after this one is gone. This world was formed from the debris caused by that war. There may well be other worlds as well, formed by such debris; and their will be worlds formed after his was is gone, because the war is unending.

04 -- The Elemental Planes are at eternal war. This world was created to give the Elemental denizens a place in which to conduct combat, so that their own Planes can be left unharmed. This world is a theater of war for powerful, other worldly beings. Wild fires, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, and all similar natural disasters are nothing but battles in this war.

05 -- The Elemental Planes were at eternal war. This world was created to give the Elemental denizens a place in which to make peace. It is considered Neutral Ground in the ongoing negotiations. These negotiations have been ongoing for millenia, and largely happen away from the direct view of those minor, insignificant creatures who have come to dwell upon the Neutral Ground and call it their own. The peace negotiations are precarious, and radical factions on all four sides are constantly looking for ways to derail them. Occasionally, the insignificant creatures are drawn into the machinations of the various Elemental Planes.

06 -- Most of the material for this world came from the Elemental Plane of Earth. As a result, that Plane has a special connection with this one.

07 -- Most of the material for this world came from the Elemental Plane of Fire. As a result, that Plane has a special connection with this one.

08 -- Most of the material for this world came from the Elemental Plane of Water. As a result, that Plane has a special connection with this one.

09 -- Most of the material for this world came from the Elemental Plane of Air. As a result, that Plane has a special connection with this one.

10 -- This world isn't a world, per se, it is the intersection point between the Elemental Planes. All elements that exist in this world, are both here and within their respective Elemental Planes at the same time. This world is where the four Planes overlap.

11 -- Our world exists as a storage area for the war effort in the conflict between the various Elemental Planes. Someday (possibly soon) the denizens of those Planes will begin removing their elemental materials from this world, for the sake of the final battle between the Planes. When that happens, this world will begin to unravel.

12 -- This world is the natural friction point where the Elemental Planes touch each other. Like a tectonic fault line, it exists to relieve the pressure between the four Elemental Planes. Should this world ever be destroyed, the four Elemental Planes would surely follow.

To be continued...
