Intro to the Linux Desktop

If you just made the switch from Windows or Mac, this section will help guide you through some of the differences you'll encounter when using your new Linux computer. If you need help getting familiar with the Linux interface and how to do certain tasks, you'll find the answers here.

This is the desktop. In Windows you knew it as "Windows" or "Windows Explorer" and on Mac it was the "Finder". On Linux, it's called "Gnome"

Components of the Gnome Desktop:

  1. Activities Overview

    Here you'll find all of your applications, as well as an overview of all the open windows. It's hard to lose track of stuff when you keep them all in one place! Try moving your mouse into the top left corner of your screen to try it out.

  2. Volume Control

    Adjust the volume of your computer here in the top right corner of your desktop.

  3. Wifi and Network

    Get online easily with the networking control in the top right corner of your screen. Click it to join wireless networks when you're on the go, or to make sure you're connected to the wired network at home or at work.

  4. Notification area

    Hate all those pop-up screens while you're trying to work? On the Gnome desktop, important notifications happen at the bottom of your screen, unobtrusive but noticeable.

  5. Your files

    To view your files, you can use the Nautilus file manager. It works a lot like Windows Explorer or Finder; your Home directory and the Trash are on the left, and all your data is on the right.

  6. Log Out
